about

"Something of golden, summery innocence; Randle's vocals reach and caress, tender and haunting. The album fingers the sense of yearning that is easily buried beneath the hum-drum and demands of busy lives;

Feeling the way through the gamut of the human experience –
channeling the joy of being alive in “Bellbird” as open-heartedly as when reaching for raw places that few of us dare linger over, such as in “Crippling”.

The humanity of this album is one of its strengths, drawing as it does on the ordinary, extraordinary experiences of a man and a woman; babies are born; there are the Christchurch earthquakes and a community simultaneously ripped apart and fused together; a friend dies; there is the brief tasting of an unspeakable and transcendent beauty.

Keegan is such an emotive drummer and there is a tangible strength in the creative interplay of Eyreton Hall’s many talented collaborators with complex melodies playing against bare spaces and easily traversed interludes, so that the album strikes a yin-yang, Bic Runga-esque piquancy; melancholic enough to matter, playful and light enough to make the journey a sweet one."

Andrew Keegan and Toni Randle are the alt folk duo, Eyreton Hall.
From different parts of the antipodes, Toni, born in Christchurch and Andy in Sydney. Toni had a misspent youth filled with dancing, singing and piano lessons. Andy played big band drums and busked every weekend.

Track Name: Bellbird
BELLBIRD T Randle
As I went walking out one day
I left my true love by the way side
And I heard the bellbird sing

The mountains told me secrets to keep
But I walked on with bound and broken feet
And I heard the bellbird sing

The orchard full of misspent years
The grass is long but seldom are the branches bare
Heavy with a harvest of misspent years

The olive trees swing in the breeze,
But gold and silver were stolen by frosty thieves
And I heard the bellbird sing

But do you remember how we wed, underneath the branches green?
Do you remember what you said, underneath the branches green?
I wore a dress a shade of red, underneath the branches green

The old man works his years away
She waits at home, for the day that he’ll say,
“I’m coming home to stay”

She works her fingers to the bone
For this is her kingdom and her throne
For they heard the bellbird sing

My babies sleep with porcelain skin
With cheeks that glow like crab apple trees in July
And I heard the bellbird sing

And do you remember how we wed, underneath the branches green?
Do you remember what you said, underneath the branches green?
I wore a dress a shade of red, underneath the branches green

And I was lost, now I’m found, for I heard the bellbird,
Sing
Track Name: Featherstitch
FEATHERSTITCH T Randle
You look at your babies, you look, you look
Look deeper love, look deeper love
Your finger tips tremble with all that they’ve known
Touch longer love, not long enough
And how,

How do you do it love?
And how,
How do you face it love?
And how,
How do you walk with aching feet?
With everything so incomplete?
When everything is broken

The sun and your shadow still follow the light
But now it’s betrothed to another
And the clay makes an imprint wherever you lie
But the rain’s just a jealous lover And how,

How do you do it love?
And how,
How do you face it love?
And how,
How do you walk with aching feet?
With everything so incomplete?
When everything is broken
Track Name: Lovelessly
LOVELESSLY A Keegan
Daybreak, Our sunrise
It’s cold, No surprise
We sit, side by side
Our sins come to light

So don’t go, stay with me
We’ll talk breathlessly
We’ll walk through the day
Restless come what may

We gathered up the words we never said
Rearranged them in our heads
We had enough of things that made no sense
So we’re at the start again
We made a vow to never, never ever lie
Cause the truth is like a song
So won’t you sing to me?
Sing to me of change
Of the reasons, you do remain

It’s night
Blind as love
Your breath comes in clouds
One spark is all we need
Track Name: The Marriage
THE MARRIAGE T Randle
You and I, we disagree
Except on that one thing which we agree

You and I see things differently
Except on that one thing which we see similarly
Except for that
And that’s okay with me

You’re always stubborn when I’m always right
And sometimes I’m stubborn when maybe you’re always right too
You see the grass as much greener elsewhere
And I look at elsewhere and feel tired just thinking of the mowing
Except for that
And that’s okay with me
And that’s okay with me

And sometimes you plug in my phone without me even asking
And sometimes I let you sleep in even though I’m plain exhausted
And sometimes you hold my hand when my doubt is crushing explicit
And sometimes you close all the doors but I wait it out, as I calmly put back the scissors

And that’s okay with me
And that’s okay with me

Sometimes I just look at you and I know
That you know, and knowing that you do
Well that’s okay
With me
THE MARRIAGE T Randle
You and I, we disagree
Except on that one thing which we agree

You and I see things differently
Track Name: Ladders
LADDERS T Randle
As the morning bludgeons the evening and the darkness is all but a scent
And your footprints shatter the slivers of stars into tiny shards where you went
And the howls ring out through the frozen air for the wolves have not yet been released
And they’ll greet you with a loyalty reserved for lovers, but you can never trust the beast

And the kowhai tree could never bare the burden of snow
And the knowing winter would bring and how your discontentment would grow
And the skyline’s beauty bruised, set behind poplar trees
Makes her heart hang its heavy head, the weight set to buckle her knees
She’s down on her knees

And she’ll sit in her refuge of silver and she’ll write till her fingers are numb
Some she’ll keep but most she will discard in the hope that others will come
And the wood smoke swift and inviting tells of days much different from these
She’s surrounded by boxes that lie open mouthed, unassuming and willing to please
And the kowhai tree could never bare the burden of snow

And she’ll clap her hands and destroy him and the sound will hollow resound
But she’ll gravely underestimate how she will wound him and the ladders that he’ll place around
Track Name: Just In Case Allelujah
JUST IN CASE ALLELUJAH
T Randle
Sun on my back in the morning
Yes I am afraid of dying
Leaving behind all my treasures
Yes I am afraid of dying

Would not the birds stop their chorus?
Would not the trees in the forest – stop bow their heads to acknowledge a life,
A life well spent, a life with intent?
No they would not

For all the years that I’ve wasted
Yearning for more than I’ve tasted
Failing to be in the moment
Yes I am afraid of dying

Would not the birds stop their chorus?
Would not the trees in the forest – stop bow their heads to acknowledge a life,
A life well spent, a life with intent?
No they would not
Would not the rain’s salty sorrows
Fall from forlorn faded skies?
All in a bid to acknowledge a life,
A life well spent, a life with intent
No they would not

Faultless, Faceless
Feathered, Flightless
Gleamed, Glistening
Allelujah, Allelujah
Tread without trace, Walk with grace
Allelujah, Allelujah
Scarlet, splendour
Allelujah, Allelujah
Track Name: Crippling
CRIPPLING T Randle
I’m not as supple as I used to be
This fruit has been used and abused
My resilient nature so eager to please
And it’s crippling dear, isn’t it?

And if this is an upper, then what of the downers?
Endorphins set to explode
And I thank god you tolerate me like you do

And it’s crippling dear, isn’t it?
It’s so crippling dear, isn’t it?

And it was always you
It was always you
It was always you
Track Name: Salt and Sixpence
SALT AND SIXPENCE
T Randle
Salt and sixpence for your thoughts
Never endings of sorts
Flat as the ocean I will rock you gently
And I’ll try to sway in time
Until you change key

And all of the ladies in their gilded frames
Their painted mouths barely concealing their disdain
Your false bravado makes for interesting reading
And nothing will ever grow, if you don’t stop the bleeding

And if you’ll be my boat,
then I’ll be the blue
And I’ll try not to float,
too close to you
So flicker and dance little light in the inky black sea of me,
and I’ll sail out to greet you,
To greet me

And for every note that is perfect and true,
your imperfections have a much brighter hue
For every look that’s directed at me,
reflects in a mirror for all to see
Track Name: David and Goliath
DAVID AND GOLIATH T Randle
For I know your face so well,
and the lines with tales to tell
For I know you are not strong,
but I’ll try to help you carry on

And for Joy we know he sings
Songs of innocence, memories of springs
And Pat-a-cake will wear his ring,
Queen of his heart
But to his maker now he clings

David weep for Goliath
For he was good, brave and strong
Raise your hands in surrender
He is safe
He is where he belongs

There’s a faint breeze in the air
I will help her wash you bare
As the decorations dance
One last look,
One final glance
Track Name: Parachutes
PARACHUTE T Randle
I’m leaving home again
I’m leaving home again
With the stars I’ve collected in an old gumboot
With the scent of you in my parachute
I’m leaving home again

I’m leaving home again
I’m leaving home again
With a stain burnt orange on my tongue of you
With a burgeoning pain in my left eye tooth
I’m leaving home again

And I’ll stand on the porch by the door once more
And I’ll bid you farewell like I did before

Cause I’m leaving home again
I’m leaving home again
Track Name: Softhearted Anne
SOFT HEARTED ANNE T Randle
Little Anne is so soft hearted and her hands are only small
But her Mumma will not see it
Her biggest regret of all

And her Daddy’s shoulders slumber - far too shamed to try at all
He’ll concern himself with numbers - they won’t ask him to grow tall

And through this life soft she wanders,
spreading all her laughter and light
Can’t they see she’s the lyric of a gypsy?
Little Anne is beauty’s sight

And although she’ll one day marry,
find a love that’s pure and still
And her darlings will adore her
But now life’s a bitter pill

Darkened arrows quick to find flesh
Quick to throw but hard to catch
And still she will walk on magic
Softhearted but still intact

Round and round it goes
Track Name: And So It Goes
AND SO IT GOES T Randle
I will love you till my eyes don’t shine
And so it goes
And I will want you till the last of the summer wine
And so it goes

And so it goes

But darling I’ll surely hurt you with some silly thing I said
And so it goes
But darling you make, you make my sun set a brighter red
And so it goes

And so it goes
